All highways and expressways in Slovenia are toll roads and require a valid vignette.

Slovenia vignettes cannot be purchased at checkpoints or toll stations and must be ordered online.

All cars, motorhomes, motorbikes and vans up to 3.5 tons are required to have a valid vignette to travel on any toll roads in Slovenia. The Slovenia vignette is linked directly to your vehicle’s license plate.

You don’t need to display any physical document or sticker on your vehicle. The digital registration linked to your license plate is checked automatically by cameras.

What is the Swiss E-Vignette?

The Swiss e-vignette is a digital motorway toll pass that grants vehicles legal access to Switzerland’s extensive network of motorways and national roads. Introduced in August 2023 as an alternative to the traditional adhesive vignette sticker, the e-vignette serves the same essential purpose but offers enhanced convenience and flexibility for motorists.

Unlike the physical sticker that must be affixed to your windshield, the e-vignette is electronically linked to your vehicle’s license plate number. This digital system allows you to purchase your vignette online from anywhere in the world and begin using Swiss motorways immediately upon purchase.

The e-vignette fulfills Switzerland’s mandatory toll requirement for all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes traveling on motorways and semi-motorways.

Why you need a Swiss Vignette

Driving on Swiss motorways and expressways without a valid vignette is illegal and results in significant penalties. Switzerland uses a unique flat-rate vignette system instead of toll booths, making the vignette mandatory for accessing approximately 1,549km of motorways throughout the country.​

This extensive network connects all major Swiss cities including Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Basel, Lausanne, and Lucerne, as well as vital international routes linking Switzerland to neighboring France, Germany, Italy, and Austria.

All motor vehicles and trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes must display a valid vignette when using Swiss motorways and national roads of class 1 and 2. This requirement applies equally to Swiss residents and foreign visitors, including tourists, business travelers, and anyone transiting through Switzerland.

Consequences of not having a valid Vignette

The consequences of driving without a valid vignette are substantial. If caught on Swiss motorways without proper authorization, you face an immediate fine of CHF 200 (approximately £175 or €212), plus you must still purchase the vignette for CHF 40. This brings the total penalty to CHF 240—six times the cost of simply purchasing the vignette in advance.​

Swiss authorities use a sophisticated enforcement system combining manual inspections and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at strategic motorway locations. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) conducts regular border checks and roadside inspections, while cantonal police patrol with ANPR-equipped vehicles to detect violations.

How long is the Swiss Vignette valid for?

The Swiss e-vignette for 2025 is valid from 1 December 2024 to 31 January 2026—a full 14 months of coverage. This extended validity period provides value and convenience, especially for frequent travelers or those planning multiple trips throughout the year.​

Switzerland does not offer daily, weekly, or monthly vignette options. The annual vignette is the only option available.

Which vehicles need a Swiss Vignette?

The Swiss e-vignette is mandatory for all motor vehicles and trailers with a maximum total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, including:​

    • Cars and passenger vehicles: All private automobiles regardless of size or fuel type​
    • Motorcycles: Two-wheeled vehicles using motorways require their own vignette​
    • Campervans and motorhomes: Recreational vehicles under 3.5 tonnes​
    • Delivery vans: Light commercial vehicles up to the weight limit​
    • Trailers and caravans: Each trailer requires its own separate vignette, even when towed by a vehicle that already has one​

     

    Important note on trailers: If you’re towing a caravan or trailer, you must purchase an additional e-vignette specifically for the trailer.

    Heavy Vehicles Over 3.5 Tonnes:

    Vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes do not use the vignette system. Instead, they are subject to Switzerland’s Heavy Vehicle Fee (LSVA – Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe), which is calculated based on vehicle weight and distance traveled.

How much does the Swiss e-Vignette cost?

The official price for the Swiss e-vignette is CHF 40 (Swiss Francs). This is the same price as the adhesive vignette sticker.​

Do I need anything else for driving in Switzerland?

While your e-vignette covers the vast majority of Swiss motorways, two specific tunnels require additional separate toll payments:​

  • Great St Bernard Tunnel (connecting Switzerland and Italy): Requires a separate toll payment regardless of vignette possession​
  • Munt la Schera Tunnel: Also subject to additional toll charges

What if I have a private number plate?

The Swiss Vignette is linked to your number plate.

If you transfer the number plate to a new vehicle the e-Vignette automatically transfers and remains valid for the new vehicle.
